Enforcement-Compliance

OMVIC enforces Ontario’s consumer protection legislation related to vehicle sales. In carrying out this role, OMVIC utilizes the following:


Inspections

OMVIC's Inspectors conduct routine inspections of registered dealers to ensure ongoing compliance with legislation.


Discipline

Breaches of OMVIC’s Code of Ethics by a dealer or salesperson is grounds for OMVIC’s Registrar to issue a Notice of Disciplinary Action which starts the disciplinary process. For more information about the discipline process click here. To review past discipline decisions click here.


Investigations and Prosecutions

OMVIC Investigators are appointed under the MVDA and the Provincial Offences Act. All former police officers they conduct investigations and are empowered to lay charges under a number of provincial statutes.


Licence Appeal Tribunal

OMVIC’s Registrar may issue a proposal to suspend, refuse or revoke registration. The Registrar's proposal can be appealed to the Licence Appeal Tribunal (LAT) which is an independent tribunal that hears appeals of Proposals. To review past LAT decisions click here.

Holding Dealers/Salespeople Accountable

OMVIC makes information public related to all dealers and salespeople who have been charged/convicted, disciplined for a breach of code of ethics, or issued a proposal to refuse/suspend or revoke registration. Below are links to searchable lists related to these matters.
